This past week I chose Nashville as the destination for a bike ride.  The goal was to get there in time to see She & Him at the Mercy Lounge.  I made it there, and it was worth the sore butt.  Zooey was charming and talented, and M. (Mad Scientist) Ward was amazing on guitar.  She found the right horse to hitch her wagon to.  They had great chemistry and looked like they were having fun when they weren't being blinded by a constant barrage of flash pictures by the Nashvillians.  See my low-fi video of the opening song.

I'd buy it just for the song "I Grieve".  I've never listened to the whole album.  It has ten songs and only one is under 6 minutes long. Four songs are over 7 minutes.

So
I'd have rated it a 10 if it weren't for the goofy Sledgehammer song.  That song sounded like Robert Palmer to me.

Mike
Funny.  Not for the kids, though.

Mike
Very funny guy, but some songs too crude for the kids (or mom) to hear.  Great fun, though.

This album still brings out the primal beast in me after all this time.  This is my favorite.  I could never really get into their other albums.

This is Bragg at his best.

I gave these guys a chance because there was a lot of buzz about them.  The songwriting and music is cool, but ultimately the singer's voice is annoying.  I tried to like it, but he made my dog leave the room.

This guy is really young.  I think he'll get better.  The album wasn't as good as I'd read.  A couple really good tunes, like "Ashamed".

These guys seem to be having more fun making "music" than anybody else.  They're doing it for themselves and for anyone patient enough to give them a second listen.  Don't listen in bed or you'll have really weird dreams.  Also your spouse might ask you to turn it off.

Stephin Merritt is the leader/songwriter of The 6ths, The Magnetic Fields, The Gothic Archies and another band.  Each band explores a different sound with different levels of success.  I'm not a huge fan, but this album has a couple of fun songs with guest singers.

Happy and mellow folk singer. I can only listen to this one all at once.  If I put Erin McKeown's voice on a mix with other female singers, I always skip her songs.  It's like Sandra Bullock standing next to Nicole Kidman on the red carpet.

I found the dripping sarcasm and delightfully cynical lyrics refreshing.  I also found it romantic.  Of course, I also put a photo of open heart surgery on my wife's Valentine's Card today. Smiler
